“I was with you in
weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching
was not with enticing words of man’s wisdom.” – I Cor. 2.3-4
“‘Man’s wisdom’ includes
all methods. There is to be no playing about with lights and putting on a show,
no entertaining people in order to get at them and win them, no psychological
treatment. The Lord abhors all such things. “Not
with enticing words of man’s wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of
power” (v. 4).
There were no tricks in the work of the apostle Paul. He goes on: “That your faith should not stand in the wisdom men” – in human cleverness and
tricks and games – “but in the power of God” (v. 5). You can get adherents.
You can get people to join your church, but you do not thereby make them
Christians. The Holy Spirit alone can convince.” – Martyn Lloyd-Jones, Courageous Christianity (197)
